RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Commission host Community Conversations - Topic #6: Character and Community Building in Youth Athletics, participate in the discussion as deemed appropriate, and receive and file the report.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
On February 3, 2015, the PRCS Commission selected a topic for Community Conversations - Topic #6 with the working title “Character and Community Building in Youth Athletics,” formed the Community Conversations - Topic #6 Ad Hoc Subcommittee, and appointed Commissioner Garland and Commissioner Marin to the newly-formed Ad Hoc Subcommittee. Over the past several months, the members of the Ad Hoc Subcommittee have been planning and organizing this event. As per the Commission-adopted guidelines for Community Conversations, publicity for this Community Conversation was handled primarily by Commissioners Garland and Marin, with the assistance of City staff.

Tonight’s panel discussion, followed by a Question and Answer session, focuses on ensuring that our youth teams, sports and competition are successfully building community, camaraderie and resilience. Panelists, audience participants and Commissioners will engage in a dialogue to explore ways to foster and support the goal of youth athletics to teach participants that a sport or activity should be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one's competitors. The panel of experts on instilling sportsmanship in Youth Athletics includes:

• Lena Dobreer, Referee and Basketball Coach at Cheviot Hills
• Tom Salter, Athletic Director at Culver City High School
