RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended the City Council consider renaming Bush Way after Albert and
Ursula Vera and, if desired, direct the City Manager as deemed appropriate.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:
At the City Council meeting of January 28, 2013, the City Council discussed a
proposal to rename Bush Way after Albert and Ursula Vera. At that meeting, the
City Council directed the City Manager to proceed with this proposal by providing
notice of the City Council’s intention to formally initiate this renaming and return to
the City Council at a future meeting.
In preparation for this item, staff reviewed City Council Policy Statement 2006-01
“Naming of City Facilities” (attached hereto). In accordance with City Council Policy
2006-01, the proposed naming would fall under the category of a commemorative
naming, for which the individual(s) would need to have made “extraordinary
contributions to the community, which have been consistent and continuous over a
considerable period of time” and “be deceased for a period of at least one year prior
to the initiation of the naming process.” The request seems to comply with those
criteria.
At the meeting of January 28, 2013, a question was posed at to the origin of the
naming of Bush Way. The Culver City Historical Society provided welcomed
assistance in researching their archives as well as maps and other records City of Culver City, California

maintained by other sources. The City Clerk’s Office also reviewed the City’s
records from the time. From that review, it seems that sometime between 1950 and
1952 today’s Bush Way was renamed from Hawekotte Place. Unfortunately, the
records available do not indicate the origins of the Hawekotte Place name nor is
there a reason given for the choice of Bush Way.
Staff has reviewed the address records for Bush Way and has found that there are
no postal addresses associated with this street. Therefore, should the City Council
determine to approve this renaming, no residential or commercial address changes
would result.
Staff has extended an invitation to Mr. Albert Vera, Jr. to attend this evening’s
meeting.
FISCAL ANALYSIS:
Should the City Council determine to approve this renaming, the existing four street
signs would be replaced with the decided naming. Replacement of each sign is
estimated to cost $150 (a total of $600).
