RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council approve a purchase order with Charlie’s Fixtures to replace aging kitchen appliances at the Senior Center in an amount not-to-exceed $71,409.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The Culver City Senior Center began in the 1960s with a group of seniors who formed the “Merry Makers,” a club focused on socialization and recreation.  As the group grew, it evolved into the City’s first Senior Center, which operated at 4153 Overland Avenue, the building which is currently the Teen Center, for 30 years.

In 2003, the Senior Center moved to its current, purpose-built facility located at 4095 Overland Avenue.  The facility features various multi-purpose rooms, a fitness room, a computer lab, and patio.  It was designated as a “Focal Point” by LA County Area Agency on Aging for offering over 100 activities and services for its 3,500+ members.

A key feature of the building includes the dining room and on-site commercial kitchen.  After 22 years, the appliances in the kitchen, which were state of the art at the time the building opened, have reached their limit and continuously break down.  This has caused disruptions in the Senior Nutrition Program, and the City has received infractions on health department inspections.  Many of the parts needed for the repairs are difficult to order because they are no longer being carried by multiple distributors, or they have stopped being made.  The Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department and the Public Works Department are requesting to replace the following appliances:

                     Pass-thru heated cabinet

                     Pas-thru refrigerator

                     Reach-in refrigerator

                     Reach-in freezer

The following quotes for these appliances were received by staff:

                     Charlie’s Fixtures for $71,408.21

Edward Don & Company at $72,440.08

                     Action Sales at $79,915.74

Charlie’s Fixtures provided the lowest quote. PRCS and Public Works staff are recommending to purchase the appliances through them.

FISCAL ANALYSIS

The Adopted Budget for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 includes sufficient funding in the amount of $71,409 in Account No. 10130400.619800 (Community Services - Other Contractual Services) which can be found in the PRCS section of the budget book on page 331. Staff will move funds from that account to Account No. 10130400.600200 (Community Services - Repair and Maintenance Equipment) to more accurately reflect the nature of the expense.
