RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Commission (1) receive and file this informational item regarding the Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department Day Care, Afterschool, and Camp Programs; (2) discuss the formation of an Ad Hoc Subcommittee related to child care issues; and, (3) (if desired) form a new Ad Hoc Subcommittee and appoint two Commissioners to the newly-formed Ad Hoc Subcommittee.
BACKGROUND / DISCUSSION
At the May 3, 2016 PRCS Commission meeting during the “Public Comment - Items Not on the Agenda” portion of the meeting, Ms. Lila Swenson, a Culver City resident, spoke about the long lines and wait times that many parents experienced during the recent PRCS Department’s Summer Camp registration period. She also presented community comments on the affordability and availability of child-care in the City, specifically during spring and summer breaks (Attachment 1).
Discussion then ensued between Commissioners regarding whether the community members behind those comments might be willing to meet with a PRCS Commission Ad Hoc Subcommittee to address the issues. As a result of this discussion, Commission consensus was reached to ask staff to prepare this Agenda Item.
Information regarding the PRCS Department’s current Day Care, Afterschool, and Camp Programs is listed in Culver City Living, which can be accessed on the City’s website. Pages of interest from the Summer Edition of Culver City Living, including the Registration Information page are included as Attachment 2.
