City of Culver City, California City Council Agenda Item Report Meeting Date: 06/15/2007 Item Number: A-3 AGENDA ITEM: Discussion of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee and Consideration of Funding for the Committee in the Amount of $2,000. Contact Person/Dept.: Jerry B. Fulwood, Phone Number: (310) 253-6000 City Manager Fiscal Impact: Yes [] No [X] General Fund: Yes [] No [X] Public Hearing: [] Action Item: [X] Attachments: [] Public Notification: Master Notification List (06/13/07); Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee (06/13/07) Department Approval: City Attorney Approval: RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council discuss the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee and consider funding for the Committee in the amount of $2,000.00 for Fiscal Year 2007/2008. BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION: In 2005, the City Council appointed two members of the City Council as a Council Subcommittee to work together with staff and members of the public to plan and implement an event celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to commemorate his important teachings of tolerance, equality, and peace. After months of planning and with a modest budget of $500, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee (MLK Committee) presented its first event in January, 2006. Building on the success of the first event, the MLK Committee expanded the prior year’s event to a three day commemoration in 2007. Once again, the event was well-attended. The MLK Committee is already working hard on planning the January, 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. event. Given the continuing success of this event, I am proposing the City Council consider increasing the budget for the MLK Committee from $500 to $2000 in FY 07/08. In the absence of the hard work and dedication of the members of the MLK Committee, the City would expend direct and indirect dollars to plan and implement an event of this caliber. It is proposed this funding would be allocated in the City’s Budget to the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services under the control of the Director of Jerry B. Fulwood (06/14/07) Carol Schwab (by H. Iker) (06/14/07) City Controller Approval: City Manager Approval: Marlee Chang (06/14/07) Jerry B. Fulwood (06/14/07) City of Culver City, California City Council Agenda Item Report Parks, Recreation, and Community Services. The Director (or his/her designee) would continue to work closely with the members of the MLK Committee to produce another successful event in January, 2008. FISCAL ANALYSIS: Approval of this proposal would increase the proposed Fiscal Year 2007/2008 budget to a total of $2,000 for this event. ATTACHMENTS: None MOTION: That the City Council: Direct staff to include an appropriation in the total amount of $2,000 in the Fiscal Year 2007/2008 proposed budget for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee’s event of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.
