Proclamation in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 16, 2006.

P R O C L A M A T I O N
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the most visible advocates in America of non-violence and social change
for the advancement of civil rights and public service; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. changed a nation by awakening the American conscience to the immorality of racism
and was the driving force behind landmark legislation including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the
Fair Housing Act of 1968, that allows Americans of every race, background and culture to live better lives today; and,
WHEREAS, the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the commitment of the City of Culver City to human rights are
worthy of reflection and serve as a reminder that improving the quality of life for all members of society is a responsibility of every
member of our community; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Culver City enjoys a rich diversity in its population that provides the City with a greater quality of
life, which we owe in part to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream of unity for America and his lessons on how to overcome prejudice;
and,
WHEREAS, the City of Culver City wishes to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by honoring his
dream and legacy with this Proclamation and activities planned by the City’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Planning Committee
and encouraging residents to participate.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Culver City, California, hereby proclaims
Monday, January 16, 2006, as “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day” in the City of Culver City and encourages all citizens to rededicate
themselves to the principles of respect for human rights and freedom, belief in non-violence and commitment to improving our
community through service and volunteerism.
