RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration & Juneteenth Celebration Advisory Committee approve a recommendation the members of the Volunteers Engagement Ad Hoc Subcommittees.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

Since October 27, 2025, Volunteer Engagement the Ad Hoc Subcommittee (Subcommittee) through email has been discussing various options to encourage volunteer participation and various ways to help the community.

Some options that have been discussed include:

Setting up a Food Collection at the Entrance: With many people affected by the SNAP benefit shortage that happened during the Government shutdown, some members wish to collect food and donate it to the food centers that have experienced the additional strain on their resources.  Some examples include Los Angeles Regional Food Bank or the LA Community Fridge.

Setting up a Non-Perishable Collection at the Entrance:  Many people are in need currently and the Subcommittee members felt donating to collection centers in need was in line with the message and themes center around Martin Luther King Jr.’s messages.

Voting Registration Area: Multiple Advisory Committee members have voiced their concern with the future of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.  Creating an area to register people in attendance to vote will help educate people on their right to vote and spread the word about resources that help voters.

Staff is also open to additional ideas to increase volunteer participation from attendees.
