RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) (1) receive a report from the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee; (2) if so desired, discuss and consider approval of the report’s recommendations; and (3) determine next steps as deemed necessary.
BACKGROUND
At the September 17, 2024, Special Meeting, EHRAC achieved consensus to create a Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee and appoint Chair Bano and Members Valverde, Mora-Fattorini, and Renteria thereto. The Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee will explore the idea of creating and/or recommending the creation of a Youth Advisory Committee for the City of Culver City.
At the October 22, 2024, Regular Meeting, EHRAC achieved consensus to hear a report from the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee.
As reported by the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee, a number of cities already have youth advisory councils. Some of these cities include the City of Los Angeles, the City of Long Beach, and Palos Verdes. See links to these programs contained within the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee Report. (Attachment 1)
It is the belief of the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee that a City of Culver City Youth Advisory Committee would benefit the City by:
● Addressing youth specific issues directly with youth;
● Increasing community engagement;
● Building partnerships and developing mentorships;
● Helping to develop future leaders; and
● Creating a more inclusive environment.
DISCUSSION
On November 19, 2024, EHRAC may review and discuss the report from the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee, the potential areas of concentration, specific goals for the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee, and a time frame in which the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee hopes to achieve these goals.
Potential areas of concentration presented in the Youth Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittee report are as follows:
● Advocating for more City-sponsored youth services;
● Helping to assess youth impact related to City projects;
● Initiating youth development programs;
● Raising awareness of City systems, services, and events; and
● Addressing current City related issues.
FISCAL ANALYSIS
Currently, there is no associated fiscal impact with this agenda item.
