RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) (1) discuss the report from the Latino Heritage Month Ad Hoc Subcommittee on the Latino Heritage Month event plan; (2) consider approval of the report’s recommendations and determine next steps; and (3) provide direction to staff if deemed appropriate.
BACKGROUND/ DISCUSSION
During the May 24, 2022 meeting, the Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) created the Latino Heritage Month Ad Hoc Subcommittee and appointed then-Chair Rebecca Rona, former Vice Chair (now Chair) Carlos Valverde, and Committee members Haifaa Moammar and Jared Morgan. Latino Heritage Month begins in mid-September and extends through October 15, 2022.
The Latino Heritage Month Ad Hoc Subcommittee would like to discuss planning a celebration to honor Latino Heritage Month with the Culver City community. The Ad Hoc Subcommittee is suggesting offering food, student art, music, dancing, storytelling, and various other elements to honor the Latino Heritage.
The Latino Heritage celebration is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October 11, 2022, from 6:00pm - 9:00; however, a location is still being determined. The Ad Hoc Subcommittee is considering holding the event in an outdoor location such as the City Hall Courtyard Plaza or the Veterans Memorial Park.
Coordinating this event will involve City staff from multiple departments. The event was approved by the City Council during the September 19, 2022, City Council meeting.
FISCAL ANALYSIS
There will be costs associated with securing food vendor(s), possibly paying performers or speakers, licensing, permitting, and securing special event insurance.
