RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Equity & Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) (1) receive the report from the Indigenous Peoples Day Ad Hoc Subcommittee on event proposals; (2) discuss report’s proposals and determine next steps on implementing the event; and (3) provide direction to staff if deemed appropriate.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
During the June 22, 2021 meeting, the Ad Hoc Subcommittee to plan public events for the 2020-2021 fiscal year presented a report of the proposed remaining events for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The Indigenous People’s Day event is one of the proposed events that is tentatively scheduled to occur on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 during EHRAC’S regular meeting.
The Indigenous People’s Day Ad Hoc Subcommittee is comprised of member Rona, Committee chair, and member Di Vincente, Committee member. Below is the proposed list of elements to occur during the event:
• Brief welcome by the chair;
• Music performed by a Native American musical ensemble;
• Speaker: Miztlayxochitl Aguilero (culture, challenges);
• Q&A with speaker;
• Student art, presented individually (approximately 5 pieces);
• Speaker: Charles Alvarez, Tribal Chairman, Gabrielino Tribe (Gabrielino history;
• Q&A with speaker;
• Photo presentation of historical Gabrielino sites;
• Native American expression of gratitude (similar to a prayer, to send people on their way).
FISCAL ANALYSIS
There is no fiscal impact associated with this Agenda item.
