RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council (1) discuss a potential Hero Pay Ordinance to provide additional compensation to grocery workers, retail workers and front-line workers at Southern California Hospital; and (2) provide direction to the City Manager as deemed appropriate.


BACKGROUND

At the February 22, 2021 City Council Meeting, there was consensus by City Council to agendize consideration of a "Hero Pay" ordinance to provide additional compensation to grocery workers, retail workers and front-line workers at Southern California Hospital (SCH). Several other Southern California municipalities, including the County of Los Angeles, City of Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Long Beach, and Montebello as well as San Leandro, Oakland and San Jose in northern California, have adopted hero pay ordinances to require employers in the grocery, drug, and retail industries to provide additional compensation to their essential and public-facing employees during the COVID-19 crisis.
