RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the conversion of $331,605 in Unclaimed Funds in the possession of the Police Department to the Police-Unrestricted/Conversion Account pursuant to Culver City Municipal Code Section 3.04.310.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The Culver City Police Department's Property Room receives all property (including U.S. Currency) booked in as either evidence, found, or safekeeping. Property booked as evidence is held until the case is adjudicated. Upon adjudication, property is either returned to owner or held when unclaimed or unidentified. Found property has no identifiable owner, and is held pending claim from rightful owner or finder. Safekeeping property owners are notified to claim such property.
All unclaimed U.S. Currency booked into the Culver City Police Property Room is deposited into a City bank account. Per Government Code Sections 50050 and 50051, money that is not the property of a local agency that remains unclaimed for three years becomes the property of the local agency on a designated date not less than 45 days nor after 60 days of published notice (once a week for two successive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation).
