RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council (1) consider extending Dr. Janet Hoult's term as Honorary Artist Laureate for Poetry until a new Artist Laureate is appointed; and (2) direct the City Manager as deemed appropriate.


BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The City Council appointed Dr. Janet Hoult as Honorary Artist on September 28, 2015 for a two-year term expiring on December 31, 2017. On March 12, 2018, the City Council approved a motion to implement an Artist Laureate Program with the FY 2018-19 budget and work plan.

Dr. Hoult has expressed a willingness to continue her volunteer role as the Honorary Artist Laureate until a new Artist Laureate is appointed by City Council which, according to the program guidelines, would be in June 2019. Dr. Hoult has worked alongside staff and the Cultural Affairs Commission's Artist Laureate Subcommittee on developing the program guidelines and application form. In addition, Dr. Janet Hoult, has worked tirelessly since her appointment in 2015 to promote poetry in Culver City, teaching a Word Painting Poetry Class at the Senior Center, writing poems for specific events during the Centennial year, organizing a poetry contest, and ed...
